What do you need in a running coach? A canned program that never gets updated? No contact except maybe an email or two? No understanding of how your training fits into the rest of your life? That’s not how the Runners Hotline works. We won’t develop a running training program for you without knowing you, your goals, your specific needs and challenges.
Need help with mental prep? You will get it. Need a strength and conditioning program. We can do that. Advice on nutrition? We’re here for you.
We will meet via Zoom at least 2x before we send you your program. We then meet every 2-4 weeks (depending on the program you select) to review your progress and make any required changes so that it fits into your life and we can carefully track your progress.

Meet the Coaches
Charles Shapiro
Founder/Runner/Coach
A runner for over 50 years, Charles is an RRCA Level 1 Certified Coach. Charles was All-State in Cross Country and Track in High School then ran at Boston University and the University of Maryland. A 2:33 marathoner and 30:50 10k runner,, Charles left the corporate world in 2020 to become the Head Cross Country and Distance Coach at Holy Family HIgh School in Broomfield, CO. He immediately led both the girls and boys teams to 2 consecutive Regional Championships (the first in school history) and their best combined girls and boys finish in the State Championships. In addition to The Runners Hotline, Charles works with Ric Rojas of Rise Running and their group of open, master and elite runners. This is where he is happiest: working with runners. ❝There is nothing better than seeing runners reach and exceed their goals: especially when they start with a good deal of uncertainty❞

I used to be a competitive ultra-marathon runner. I have run 7 x one-hundred-mile races in my lifetime. But during my career as a runner, I struggled silently with an eating disorder and abused exercise and my body. It was no surprise really that my body had enough of my behaviors and by 2014, I was forced to retire from running. I then discovered lifting weights + eating carbohydrates, and fell in love pretty quickly.
My goal is to be the Coach I needed when I was struggling. Today, I’m a Dietitian Nutrition Coach that’s obsessed with educating both competitive + recreational runners how to FUEL their bodies to look good, feel good, and set PR’s both on and off the roads + trails. Over the course of almost twenty years, my professional focus has centered on collaborating with clients to facilitate weight loss, enhance body composition, improve performance, and promote improvements in health and longevity.
I’m a bit of a data nerd, so I love to geek out over things like your customized macronutrient breakdown (how many calories, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats you need to support your goals), and biofeedback (ie: sleep, energy, stress, digestion, hormones, menstrual cycle, etc) to create a personalized plan for you. Because nutrition isn’t a one size fits all approach, my goal is to work with you to develop the most sustainable and maintainable balance. Outside of teaching people how to fuel their bodies, you can catch me backpacking and hiking up mountains in Colorado with my family (my husband and two yellow labs). Sometimes we might not need long-term coaching, accountability, and support; but just need the roadmap to get started. ie: You don’t know what to do, but can do it/follow through with professional guidance. Our clients don’t question their food choices because they have a clear, defined strategy of how to fuel their body for their personal goals. At CWA, we believe nutrition shouldn’t be a cookie cutter approach. Once you sign on with us, you’ll get access to our Nutrition Portal/App and complete your Initial Nutrition Assessment, giving Coach Abby all the details on where you currently are, so she can best strategize where you need to go.
From there, you will have your Initial Zoom Call with Coach Abby (usually ~1 week from when you sign on) to establish your nutrition roadmap with customized macro recommendations + a periodized plan. Multi-phase approach to diagnosing what you need to do in order to train hard, stay injury-free and race fast. In your process we will:
- Learn your history with strength and conditioning.
- Understand your injury history. Are there reoccurring themes with your injuries?
- Learn about what you know about how an integrated strength and conditioning program can help your running? What’s worked in the past? What hasn’t?
We will then conduct a mobility/movement screening where you will video yourself doing movements so I can see exactly how your body moves and where you are strong and weak. I want to see how your body loads and unloads forces.
Next is a strength screening where you will perform several repetitions of various exercises. Yes, this can be humbling but we’re focusing on how to get you stronger and more injury-resistant, so you have to do it.
With these videos in hand, I will design a custom exercise program to take you through the training schedule with your running coach. I will send the plan to your coach so it can be integrated into your training schedule. Get ready for big results!
