Twelve ago, I decided to work with an online coach. I joined a running group but their program was geared for specific races and their training was a one-size fits all mish-mash of training that simply didn’t work for me. So, I went looking for an online coach. I knew a friend that was working with one and asked her. Within a few days, I had an online coach.
The coach was a well known elite runner: one of the very best in the mid 1980s. What the coach didn’t do was learn about me, nor did the coach care. I received emails every 2 weeks after telling the coach (not I am not saying he/she/them) what happened that week.
I stopped working with the coach after I ran a race that came within a few blocks of the coach’s house. I told him/her about the race. The coach said they would come. The coach didn’t come and didn’t send me an email saying, “hey, something came up. I couldn’t come. I hope you had a great race and look forward to hearing about it.” I heard nothing.
What I took from this is that the coach didn’t care about me. That was the dealbreaker. I needed a coach that cared about me and this was not that person.
